World Book Day is a day to celebrate reading and ensure that every young person and child has a book they can call their own. World Book Day is April 23rd this year, so if you’re looking for a fun way to celebrate reading in the classroom, you’re in luck!
There are so many benefits when you start reading at a young age. World Book Day is an excellent opportunity to get your students excited about reading while celebrating some of their favorite authors and stories.
World Book Day Ideas
Transform a space into a storybook character’s room.
A fun way to bring your student’s favorite stories to life is by transforming a space or a few spaces in your classroom into a storybook character’s room! You can create a magical treehouse to celebrate The Magic Treehouse series or make a place that Nancy Drew would love to hang out!
Go on a mystery hunt
Make reading comprehension more interactive by having your students go on a mystery hunt! You can do this in the classroom or extend the activity across multiple classrooms and even the school!
Skype with an author
Many children’s authors would be more than happy to talk to the class, whether in person or over Skype! Reach out to a few local authors and see if you can schedule a skype meeting with the class!
Play audio stories
One of the best ways to celebrate World Book Day is to get your kids reading! Play some audio stories in the classroom as a fun read-aloud activity.
Flashlight Reading
View book trailers for new books
You probably know about movie trailers, but did you know that they do the same thing to promote books! Lookup a few book trailers of children’s books to watch together as a class.
Watch a movie of a book you just read
From Where the Red Fern Grows to Bridge to Terabithia, there are so many great stories that have been adapted into movies! Pick one of the books that you just read together and spend the day watching the movie! You can even do a compare and contrast activity to go along with it.
Make comic strips or books
Encourage your students to make their own books by having a hands-on lesson plan to create comic strips or books.
Door decorating contest
Get other classes involved in a fun door decorating contest and see which class can make the coolest door!
Host a Book Tasting
Share a love of reading with your students by getting them to do a book tasting! This can help introduce them to different genres, new books or start a classroom book club in your classroom.
Costume Day
A fantastic way to celebrate World Book Day is to have your students dress up as their favorite storybook characters! If you are still learning virtual, still encourage them to dress up from home!
There are so many different ways you can celebrate World Book Day in your classroom, but these are some of my favorite ways to celebrate books and foster a love of reading in my students.
