Purpose of the Paragraph Rubric:
The purpose of a paragraph writing rubric is to give students a checklist. This checklist will tell students what is expected to be included in a well-written paragraph.
As educators we expect students to write a complete paragraph. Continuous modeling of paragraph writing is needed regularly. Additionally, providing students a checklist with clear expectations.
All students need a visual description of expectations broken down by category.
How to Use the Paragraph Rubric:
To start, first introduce the rubric. Model the rubric through a mini-lesson through an anchor chart.
Next, have example paragraphs to show class. Go through the different parts of the rubric using teacher and student (no name) examples to score.
Next, ask students help to locate evidence of items on the rubric. Implementing this visual technique will allow students to make a connection to each area of the rubric.
TIP: Throughout the school year try to ALWAYS color-code your writing examples. Make this an expectation. Encourage students to always color-code their own writing. This is a writing strategy for all students.
